To change the default startup and shutdown screen on your TomTom unit, you can just replace the existing picture files with ones of your own.
The pictures need to be in .bmp format (saved in "24bit colour") and have to be a very specific size and shape. All of this can be done in a "Paint" program on your PC (Microsoft Paint is the simplest but most limited, others include Paintshop Pro, Corel Photopaint, Adobe Photoshop / Elements and many more).

You then save the pictures with a specific name, and replace the original files with your new ones.

The dimensions and names are as follows.

"Normal size" screen models:
Name - splash.bmp (& suspend.bmp for shutdown if on v6 software)
Size - 320x240 pixels

NOTE: On older software you had to rotate image 90 deg. right making it 240 pixels wide by 320 high before saving. (I think this is no longer required but no longer have an apropriate model to check. If anyone has any definitive info about this, please advise.)

Widescreen models:
Name - splashw.bmp & suspendw.bmp for shutdown
Size - 480x272 pixels

** Update: On software v7 the shutdown screen has been renamed "antitheftw.bmp", and to show it you need to have "Warn not to leave device in the car" ticked in "Safety Preferences. **

Notes:
1. The file is put in the "root directory" of the SD card or harddrive of your Go. If you don't know what this means, then please be very careful of making ANY modifications to your Go (or computer), because you really need to brush up on basic computing terminology first! But the quick answer is "at the top level, not inside any other folder". So if you find the level at which your map folder and the 'Licences' and 'TomTom-Cfg' folders are, then that's the level where you put the files - NOT in any folder.

2. You MUST be very careful not to call the file 'splash' or 'splash.bmp.bmp' by mistake, as neither will work. The only way to know for certain what you have named the file, is to set Windows Explorer NOT to "Hide extensions for known filetypes" in Tools/Folder Options/View tab.

3. The original "Classic" did not have a splashscreen, but if the software has been updated to v5 or above you can just add one.

4. Version 6 software adds a "turnoff" screen too called suspend.bmp or suspendw.bmp for the widescreen models. Again, you can add this to any model, if the sofware has been updated to v6.

5. For changes in version 7 see note above.

6. There are many pre-made splashscreens available on the forums -
