This loophole has now been closed, do not buy maps not intended for your exact model.

It is possible to get the functionality of NavCore 8 on a GO 920.
What you have to do is

1 - Make sure you back up your device
2 - Log into the TomTom website with your tomtom account and password that you are using for your x20 tomtomHome application.
3 - Buy the map online
4 - Where it asks what device select GO930 - this will then give acces to version 8 maps
5 - Select the map you require and purchase it.
6 - Using the TOMTOM HOME your map will be downloaded and installed.

In a nutshell you need to buy a version 8 map saying you have a x30 and then use TOMTOM Home to get it on your x20.

You will need to ensure that the account you purchase with and use on your tomtom home application are the same.

I now have IQ routes and advanced lane notification on my 920. Although I think it is more of a gimmick than a useful tool

Iteresting, but I think you've been lucky to get this to work.

Doing this sort of thing to get a bigger, less compressed map was fairly common practice, but if you look back through posts about a month ago, there are reports that TomTom have now made their maps DEVICE SPECIFIC. This meansyou can no longer buy the 1.9GByte version of the Western and Central map (intended for the Go910) and get it to work on an SD card in a One for example. You have to get the smaller 1.5GByte version.

As the hardware of the x20 and x30 models is so similar, it looks like you may have found a loophole. How long it remains, now someone knows about it, is another matter!

I should also point out that you also need the version 8.xx firmware on the 920

Andy, based on my observations in other places it isn't apparent that there are device specific maps. I suspect that there may be features of the device that limit the map that is usable on it. I have seen another report where the 8.05 map has been purchased for a 930 and put on a 920 for which it was actually bought.

Yes true. That's very likely to be how its done. I think it means the same in the end though?

And how much difference is there in the V8 map and the latest V7.20 for the x20 series is there?
Probably not enough to warrant the expenditure unless you really want ALG and IRQ.... but as the first poster said - gimmicks??

When you downloaded the map, was it to a sd card or the 920 hard drive. If the hard drive, did you remove the Western maps first or did it overwrite it.
Cheers

Apparently the v7.20 and the v8.05 maps use exactly the same actual mapping data.

I am running V7.05 maps on my 720 so an upgrade to the latest would be worth it.

Absolutely... anyone looking for the upgraded maps not on v7.20 it's an investment to think about, but heed Andy's warnings.... there have been instances of failures!

Unfortunately it now says "Map not for this device" at action number 6 above when trying to download using TOM TOM HOME. Any ideas how I can obtain the map I bought?

Unfortunately this was an old post... TomTom closed this loophole some weeks ago (as I warned!), and it is now not possible.

There are more recent topics on the forum where people are reporting that TomTom will refund your money (or credit you with the v720 map instead) if you have "inadvertently" bought the wrong one for your model.
