Right - that's it. NavCore 8 is being un-installed on my 720.

I hate:

The small compass
The way the screen is refreshed and shows the "outline" of the road when re-drawing - it's very off-putting

So - how do I downgrade from Navcore 8 and go back to NavCore 7?

Can I just copy my pre-Navcore 8 upgrade backup back to the 720, making sure I overwrite all files and everything should be back to pre-NavCore 8 status??

The easiest and safest way would be to copy the entire backup you made (yes?) just before updating, back onto the Go.

The quick and dirty way is probably to just replace all the system files (the loose files not in any folders) with the old ones, but on a major update there are often some changes to files inside folders

I'd go with Andy's option 1 as they replaced a lot of ASR files too...

I always do a clean wipe and format and then install my back up when reverting back....

Thanks for the comments.

Yes I have a pre-NavCore 8 backup, so I can just format the drive and copy all the files back, and Bob's your uncle?

BTW - Sent an email to TomTom about the "flashing" roads and the shitty new style compass....they denied that NavCore 8 was / had ever been available for the x20's... rolleyes.gif

OK - It's hard to explain - I'll try and get a video capture of it and upload it somewhere tonight.

I don`t see any difference on the roads either; they look the same as in the previous two Navcore versions on my 920.

I agree the compass is ridiculously small in this version.

One other method to roll back the device is to go to the folder where TomTom store all the downloads for updates (it should be in Documents/ TomTom/ Home/ Download/ Program). Here you will find the CAB files Home uses to update the device with, simply open the CAB using WinRar and Extract the files/ folders straight to the TomTom device - works great and doesn't involve TT Home at all.
The CAB file name will identify what version of software is contained in it and which hardware it is for, navcore_7.221.8572.gox20.cab should be the file you are looking for - Mike

(And for Gadget too, in relation to his post on the same)

The issue, if there is one, is that the outlines of roads can appear blocky, jaggy, and made up of a short number of straight jointed sections, to 'form' what is in actual effect a CURVE, rather than a nice curved line on the map/screen.

That is what manifests itself as the issue. BUT, the point is, is there actually one? And my honest answer is this:

It's not a NaCore Issue as such (i.e 8 is worse than 7 etc).

It's a MAP issue, if at all an issue! You see, as a previous owner of v7 maps on my 720, I was one of the unique few, that had BOTH Western Europe (v7 maps this is), as well as Western and Central Europe 2GB (remember, the version 7 flavour - I'll explain the relevance in a moment), of the same version number/release. And as the maps were essentially the same FILE size, despite one containing a lot more countries, I thought there must be a LOT of compression going on etc in the one with more countries.

So I set about to test it. And sure enough, found that if I parked up in the same location near to me, on a bendy urban road next to where I live, then on Western Europe, the 'curve' was created by four straight sections at differing angles. HOWEVER, at the same spot, using Western And Central Europe Map (v7), the road was made up of only THREE straight sections, to form an appearance of a curve - thus looking much less smooth etc. I tested this a few other places, and found the same. The problem is, it's NOT scientific. But it WAS enough for me to revert to the Western Europe ONLY map, as my default map, on my 720.

NOW, moving on...

With NavCore 8, we find that on my nice new 730, the map it comes with now, out the box, is Western and Central Europe, NOT Western Europe only, as an equivalent 720 model would have out the box. This 730 default map, contains MORE countries, than previous equivalent devices and their maps, BUT on a file roughly the same file size. And again, it 'seems' to me, that map compression, is that bit higher, in order to allow for this.

I see curves that are made by only a few straight sections at angles (very noticeable too on motorway/dual carriageway slip roads that just seem to HIT the actual main road sideways on, not merge in), I see 'shimmering' along distant roads on the horizon point of the screen, especially those running ALMOST left to right across the screen, and thus needing a slight diagonal edge to it etc.

These things 'seem' more prevalent and common, on my 730, than I remember on my old 720 with the less 'compressed' map. But now ONLY having this map, as it's how a 730 comes, I have no way to actually TEST this, and compare with a Western Europe only map. Hence the use of my word "seems like" it's worse.

BUT, for the extra countries it brings, and the lack of any real detrimental effect to the TT actually routing me where I need to go, I am happy to live with this 'perceived' slight change, given the map comes free/standard, with 730's now.

Hope this adds a bit more info to the curiosity you both have guys. Like anything that cannot be scientifically proved though, it is merely my OPINION of how it seems, rest assured.

Thanks for that Shad. You always seem to be able to come up with the answer. I realise it's an opinion but it would explain why those of us with v8.010 but with WE map aren't seeing this while thjose with WCE apparantly are,

Cheers mate - but you don't do at all bad yourself for trying to help people out around here, and being on a certain other site that is very frosty, you are a refreshing change of niceness on that certain other site (as is our Andy and others from here - indeed any from this site, add niceness to that other). Keep up the good work, or rather good conduct, and friendliness!

And again, I'm pleased if my long discourse sheds light on it, but I can only again stress it's just how it SEEMS to me to be, now that I no longer have a means of doing a direct like for like comparison now.

Would match up with my experiences on the x20 range though.

Cheers again mate, seriously so!

Shad, point me in the area you mentioned when you had your 720 with both maps...

Now I have V8 NC I can compare it with the old V7 maps for you, that will at least (hopefully) prove it is the compression or the Software..??!!

Cheers

I seem to remember there was a MAP Colour scheme where the road edges were a lighter grey rather than black and that had the effect of reducing the shimmer.

ONLY if you have the v7 Western Europe Map, AND the v8 Western AND CENTRAL Europe_2GB Map to corss-compare mate? AND of the same 'version or map date'.

?

It's not a NavCore 8 thing - it's simply a MAP size/version thing.
