QUOTE NavCore 8 The GO 930 and 730 are identical in hardware to the previous generation, the GO 920 and 720. They are shipped with TomTom’s newest navigational software, NavCore 8, of which the most important novelties are Traffic Lane Assistance, IQ Routes and increased Map Share options. So this means that wehn NavCore 8 is released for the x20 series, we'll get those novelties? Lane Assistance would be quite useful would it not?? -------------------- Best Regards,

Yes you should get those "novelties" (on an x20 model anyway...) Lane assistance is not quite as cool as it looks. Do you realise it is only a static image (it doesn't move)? |

Grrrrr....but I want to see buildings and trees that flutter in the wind on my GPS!! Failing that I can just look out of the window like I should be doing!

by far the most important thing here is IQ routes as this changes the very way in which the GPS will navigate you. Personally i couldn’t give a monkeys ..... with the flashy graphics though the lane assist (if indeed it is a still graphic) would be a waste of a good idea!

I'm with Lee here... I wanted the Lane Assist to move along the road as you did.... just a static picture is BORING!!!!

QUOTE Lane assistance is not quite as cool as it looks. Do you realise it is only a static image (it doesn't move)? However this does mean that you will likely be able to take the images into a graphics program to match them with whatever colourscheme you use, or create your own new graphics like you can with the startup and battery screens etc. |

I very much doubt they would be stored as image files, there would have to be 10,000+ to cover full Europe and USA motorway junctions. More probable that they are built up on the fly by the application from the map data when required.
Also remember there are two parts to this, the lane assist comprises of arrows in the lower left corner of the screen which display in normal mode as well as reality view. - Mike |

But most of the exits are the same so you would only need a few! I had this feature ( or a form of it) years ago on an old Acer. Turned it off because it obscured the map which shows you the same info anyway only clearer. I see this as another one of those things that after a while you will not use..like that daft help feature that clogs up an important menu slot.

More probable that they are built up on the fly by the application from the map data when required. But they don't need to be for all junctions! The information telling you which city etc you need to be heading towards will be added at the time on top of the image, the same as it is at the moment in the top right little "roadsign". You only need different images for different lanes and maybe a few types of exit. I would also think that the lane assist will only come into action on motorways, or roads where there are, say three or four different lanes each that you have to stay in for a specific destination. We still have to see whether they will be seperate image files or whether tomtom will encode them, but there is no way you would need 10k+! |

I would say the image would be drawn in real time the same way the maps are now.. each junction would only need the vector information to draw the image.. quite a small data group.

Re: the lane direction view.
Rather than keep speculating, shall we just ask someone who's already got one of the new machines whether they can find any static images? Anyone? |

Re: the lane direction view. Rather than keep speculating, shall we just ask someone who's already got one of the new machines whether they can find any static images? Anyone? No images of that kind at all - the view are dynamic (they 'simple' boxes in country specific colours filled with road number and f.ex. town name (as opposite to Navigon who has a big file for lane info as they make live signs)). -------------------- Best regards,

Are we talking about the same thing? This is what TomTom "Lane assist" displays look like: http://www5.jouwsites.nl/image/big_yournav/1832.jpg So there are fields and (apparently sometimes even trees) and cities on the horizon etc. |

And where is the other half of the motorway? This post has been edited by Jolly Roger: Apr 14 2008, 22:23

Are we talking about the same thing? . . So there are fields and (apparently sometimes even trees) and cities on the horizon etc. Yes, we are talking about same things. TomTom draws a picture, put in a rectangle (with road number and city name), puts the same town image in the background (with city name) and also sometimes places a tree. Navigon uses a picture of the sign post as looks in nature - meaning a data file with images. This post has been edited by Harfot: Apr 14 2008, 21:40 -------------------- Best regards,

It's a still picture - no moves. No use at all then, you have to rely on your own judgement when leaving motorways ets -------------------- I was taught to be cautious

Aaah! Light dawns....
Was it the ROADSIGNS, not the whole picture that Harfot was referring to when he said "(they 'simple' boxes in country specific colours"? |
