I bought a GO930 from Pixmania and contacted Tomtom about the fact the computer voices do not work and this is their answer

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.

There is no official release date yet for the 930 in England. They were released to distributors and some of these may have started selling them.

The reason that your voices are not working is because TomTom Home 2.2 is not fully compatible with the X30 series. When the series is released the new version of TomTom Home will be released.
The series has been released in Spain and Portugal so you can go to those sites and download the manuals in English from those sites.

With Best Regards

I have asked if Spain have an updated version of Home but no respnse yet.

The 930 is a brilliant bit of kit as was my GO910 but that has expired due to the usual fault of the motherboard de-wiring itself due to its weight and adjusting it in its screen mount.... Anyone know a 'good' repairer of Tomtom 910 ?
I did take it somewhere to be repaired and it lasted a week - yes I know maybe Tomtom would have been a better bet.

Typical TT vagueness. That's NOT the reason the Computer voices don't work... the real reason is that the correct voice files are missing from the machine because there isn't enough memory for them.

But we ARE talking about "grey imports" that Pixmania have been selling. This was mentioned in an earlier post in the "prices" topic (this one)

The issue with Home, is that they haven't bothered to get it working for the x30 models yet, so you can't even download the missing voices.

TomTom saying that you should only have voices for the country you are in, is a feeble excuse. They themselves have said in the past that if you drive in a foreign country the pronunciation of street names will be better if you use a "local" voice.

Satnav-shop do excellent repairs and if I remember correctly, it is usually "no-fix, no-fee".

I have downloaded the computer voices with Home 2.2 and all the files do appear to be there on the device but just dont work. Maybe there is/are some other files not yet available in the download?
The Spain, Portugese and Italian computer voices were already showing in the list of voices on the 930 when it arrived but they dont work as computer voices neither.

The 930 is using a slightly different version of Loquendo TTS so it will not recognise the downloaded UK voices for the x20 models
The French and Portuguese ones that were on it originally should work though

Think you'll find Spoken Address & Spoken Address (Dialogue) are both now greyed out too as the UK speech recognition files are also missing.

Other things to check...
Does it lose the time of day when you connect to the PC?
Does Traffic work with the TMC?

It will cost you return postage, but if I were you, I'd just send it straight back to Pixmania. the official UK release can't be more than a few days away now.

It keeps its time of day when connected to the PC and the TMC works albeit slowly but Im not sure whereabouts Spoken Address is on the menu and whether its available connected/disonnected to the PC.
Im not really sure why I should return it as I beleive software is the problem and not the device but if I do have any major problem with this Tomtom and dont get satisfaction quickly, I will just sue them.

The device is supplied without UK voice files, sure these can be downloaded WHEN TomTom make them available, for now if you keep the device you cannot use any of the Text To Speech options.

The ASR (Advanced Speech Recognition) will not work correctly due in part to the above.

RDS-TMC does not work in the UK (Delay information is missing), the device therefore cannot re-plan routes to avoid traffic as it has no knowledge of the duration of any delay.

You might be able to resolve the above via software patches and downloads (once available) but having to deal with TT Support on a regular basis is not a wise move. I would take the easy option and send it back then purchase a UK version once out.

As for taking them to court I think you might make a lawyer rich but wouldn't acheive much at all, TomTom have done nothing wrong, if anything your issue is with the retailer for supplying a product to a region it was never intended for - Mike

Hi there I had one of these units to, and had all the same problems , I returned my unit the day after it came, you have to send it back to coventry and it will cost you 8 pounds ,they then send the unit back to France, then about 11 days later you will get the price that the 930 cost you back on you credit card.

I have reservered one from handtec , they are charging 380 , but I got a price match and got it for 349 in the end.

I've sent the GO 930 back to Pixmania at Coventry also so Im now waiting for the credit...

It looks to be a superb product though I just hope it lives up to its looks and feel when officially released and workink in the uk. One thing I did notice was that the speaker/sounds seemed inferior quality to my GO 910?

Tomtom Home has nown been updated from ver. 2.2 to 2.3 so maybe that will help to get the computer voices working (as Ive sent it back I cant tell though)

Btw mjdj1689 - which site did you see one for 349 ? please tell.... rolleyes.gif

Apparently, yes, Home v2.3 DOES let you download the computer voices. Not sure if it can sort out the missing voice recognition files though.

And I'm afraid the speaker on the x20/x30 models is not as good as the x10's (or especially the x00's!). Just a consequence of making it all thinner and trying to increase battery life.
The quality is better at high volumes if you are using an external power supply rather than the batteries.

EDIT: The voice recognition files are now available as a separate download, not via Home.
See HERE for details.

It was on tomtoms own site for the 930 not the 930 t , if you try handtec they are selling the 930 for 380 , that price will go up soon , so I would get in now. the t is the same price as the 930 on their site at the mo.

Regarding the GO930, now showing as for sale at £399 on the Tomtom website, I asked Totom Support these questions on 22nd April 2008:-

1) GO930 - I cant find anyone with them in stock - can I buy direct from you?
2) Will the HD Traffic be subject to a subscription as well as the cost of the receiver and when will it be available?
3) Until HD (or of course Tomtom Traffic) is the RDS system useable daily now?
4) Do English computer voices work here in UK?
Thanks

30th April - still with out any response except to say they are 'Researching'

At last we have lift off - My questions dated 22 April 08 to Tomtom Support have at last been answered today, 8th May 08:

May we apologise for the delay in responding to your query.

1) I cant find anyone with them in stock - can I buy direct from you?
- We do not sell the devices directly to customers. However the GO 930 is now readily available in shops in the UK. HEre is an example Google Product Search: http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=GO+930&...ducts&hl=en

2) Will the HD Traffic be subject to a subscription as well as the cost of the receiver and when will it be available?
- Yes, you will pay for the receiver which will include a trial subscription. After the trial has expired, you will then need to pay for the subscription.

3) Until HD (or of course Tomtom Traffic) is the RDS system useable daily now?

- Yes, the RDS TMC Service is available. Signal and quality of traffic content will depend upon the Locality with the RDS TMC Traffic service however.

3) Do English computer voices work here in UK?

- Yes, it is also now possible to use TomTom Home 2.3 to download computer voices.

We hope this answers your questions sufficiently.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

I think maybe they were waiting till the 30 series became available in UK .

And, as I suspected, the stabs of Andy_P wern't all quite right, according to these answers.

I looked at the Netherlands Tomtom website (where they use HD) and it looks to me that they are charging 9.95 euros per month for HD subscription after you have bought the device but I dont speak (or read very well) the language.

Well, I got one wrong out of four.
I had read that the HD Traffic service was the same as the RDS/TMC aerial - that the subscription was included in the purchase price.

As for the workability of Traffic... does it not STILL give 1 minute delay times then? It certainly did when I wrote my post.
