Hi all!

Users who want to register here, or who have just registered need to know a few things. A few months ago, spammers and spambots became a real problem on this forum. This forced me to take some drastic actions. The most drastic action was taken with regards to the system for new registering users.

With the old system, users would register and they would receive a confirmation email with a link which they then had to click to confirm their registration. From that moment on they were registered on this forum, and could post freely here. As said, this system was abused immensely by spambots, so I had to think up something new.

I then changed the registration procedure, adding a in a human factor. Now, every new user is screened by me personally before given complete access to the forum! This is important to know because this means a couple of things.
  • When a new users registers, he/she needs to fill in the form. A lot of email address domains were blocked! Most notably the entire @.net domain, because most spambots seemed to use .net accounts for some reason. I know this is a problem for @virgin.net users. To those users I would like to say: please use a different email account, or , if this isn't possible, contact me at info@yournav.com and I'll manually set up your account for you (with your @.net email address, no problem). All I need is the login name and password of your choice.
  • If you complete the registration form, you will NOT immediately receive a confirmation email anymore. You WILL however be able to log into the forum, but NOT be able to post yet!. I first need to manually screen every new user, and validate his/her account. If access is granted, you will receive an email telling you that you are welcomed to the forum and now have full access. If you never receive this email, it is possible that I have mistaken your account for a spammers account, and it was deleted. If this was a mistake, please contact me at info@yournav.com, and I'll rectify the situation asap.
  • It is also important to know that, now there's a human factor involved, registering is not instant anymore. The validation of a new users account can take from mere seconds up to a few hours, depending on my online time. In any case, your account should be validated within 24 hours! If this is not the case, it was most likely erroneously deleted, so please drop me a line at info@yournav.com then.
This new procedure has been in place for a few months now, and works pretty well. It has kept the forum 99.9% spam-free. Occasionally, a spammer is able to slip through, but he is usually dealt with very rapidly. I know the loss of the instant-registration can be a pain, but believe me, this is much better than the alternative.

Thank you all for understanding.
Bart
