After Navigon’s Freshmaps, TomTom’s Map Update Service and Mio’s Free Map update offer, it’s now Garmin’s turn to come up with plans for keeping their navigational maps up-to-date. Even though they still won’t acknowledge it officially, we know they will soon announce that users can buy a ‘lifetime map update subscription’ with their new Garmin device.Quarter
The Garmin offer will cost the user a one time fee of ¤ 119.- . For that price, the user will receive four new Navteq map updates per year, for as long as the user owns the device.When Garmin will announce these plans officially is still unclear though. We do know that on the 15th of October, their annual map update will become available. We can only guess if the new update options will also be offered from that date.
nüMaps
Last month Garmin did officially announce their so-called nüMaps warranty. This guarantees new nüvi and zümo buyers that if a new map becomes available within 60 days after the first use of theirWhat they exactly mean by ‘first use’ has been determined very specifically: this is the moment when there is a GPS fix and the system has been used for 30 seconds at a moving speed of at least 20 kph.
