Even larger screen in new Mio Moov 580The European branch of Mio Technology has welcomed a new member into its family of Moov SatNavs today: the Moov 580 Europe Plus, which will be available in the shops from this November. The device is filled to the brim with the newest technology Mio currently has available for its navigational solutions.

Screen
The most noticeable change to the exterior is the giant 4.7 inch screen. Mio wants to offer its customers an even more comfortable user experience, Its screen is considerably larger than that of any competing unit, which means there is more room for menu icons, which are also easier to operate. During navigation, there is more room to display the map and for the treasure trove of information which is overlaid onto it.

The exterior of the Moov 580 features an aluminium border, which gives the unit an overall classy and stylish look. The new system is also only 18 millimetres thick, which makes it very sleek and handy.

MioMore
The Moov 580 user can also use MioMore. This connected services technology enables the user to download content directly to the SatNav and use all kinds of online services, think downloading POI sets during a drive, and the use of Local Search. This service enables the searching of specific locations in the area by means of (parts of) the name or type of destination. For the first time, the databases of the telephone companies are consulted for this.

This new device also enables navigating by means of NavPix photos originating from Flickr or Google Earth. It’s also possible to create locations of your own and to share those with other users.

Handsfree
Of course the handsfree function via Bluetooth connection to the mobile phone is included. Other included features are text-to-speech and the reception of actual traffic information via RDS/TMC. Through a separate quick choice menu, the driver can also contact emergency services in case of car trouble or an emergency.

As we’ve become accustomed from Mio, the Moov 580 Europe Plus also contains pre-installed safety cameras. And a built-in FM transmitter enables the playing of sound through the regular car stereo speakers.

Mapping material
Mio is and will remain a loyal customer of Tele Atlas, at least for the immediate future. The Moov 580 features a complete and recent map of 33 countries in West and Eastern Europe. This new device will feature maps with the Tele Atlas release date of April 2008, which also include the 3D orientation points which were introduced by Mio last year.

Price
As mentioned earlier, the Mio Moov 580 Europe Plus will be available starting next month, and the recommended retail price is ¤ 279, but no doubt the actual price in the shops will be a bit lower than that.

My first post on this Forum. closedeyes.gif I have read (here in England) the announcements of the launch of the new Mio Moov 500 series in Europe and later the Navman new S100 launch here in the UK.
I travel a lot in Europe and particularly in Eastern European countries such as the Balkans. The Mio would suit me better.

Questions are: (1) What is the downside of buying the Mio Moov580 Europe Plus for me here in the UK?
(2) Is there any Uk mapping on the Mio Moov ?

Thanks for reading

So I assume both models have mapping for the UK but the plus model has 11 extra eastern countries.

Thanks. I have now ascertained that the UK is fully covered. Previous Mio devices have had the option to buy Eastern European country maps but many more than the 11 quoted for the new model. So, I have emailed Mio asking the specific question. Hopefully, I will get it from the horses mouth.

My other option is to wait for Navman to announce their similar model device which has been on the Tesco web site for a couple of weeks, but no announcement from Navman as to when it will be launched.

see here

They have made an announcement about the new S100 but that is not what I need.

Perhaps there is some sort of holdup for that one. I notice also that on the Australian and NZ sites, they have had annoucement of country specific similar models to Mio Moov. Oh well! Patience is a Virtue, they say

Exactly, that is why I am looking at Mio in Europe and Navman in the UK. You may also have seen that Australia and New Zealand have this week launched new Navman devices with Navteq as the Mapping software. They lookj really exciting but I don't think I want Australian Maps. ;-)

We are nearly into 2009 and yet despite the promotion of the Mio Moov 580 Europe Plus, nothing seems to have happened. I have found it on sale through Pixmania in Slovenia and Estonia but nowhere else. What is going wrong ? Have they got problems and are trying it out in E. European countries? Navman are supposed to be launching the new S300 next month but that does not have the mapping nor the specs of the Mio Moov 580 Europe Plus. I would buy it if it were available, but when ? Anyone know ?
