New TomTom GO 940 LIVE upcoming?Only a few months after the GO 730 and 930 appeared in the shops, it seems that TomTom already has a successor lined up. On the website of a UK reseller, there is mention of a TomTom GO 940 LIVE.

Unknown
Not a lot of information is available yet but, according to the site, the new series will be shipped with the so-called LIVE services. The full extent of these services is unknown at the moment, but there should be several; among which are TomTom's traffic information service, HD Traffic. What is new are the so-called "safety warnings", petrol prices and the option of doing a local search with the aid of the Google search engine. Details are still unknown though, and when asked, TomTom responds via a spokesman that "it does "not respond to rumours"

Successor
The quick arrival of the GO x40 series is somewhat surprising, but on the other hand it could also explain why the GO x30 series, which was introduced last March, is 100% identical (hardware-wise) to the GO x20 of 2007. As you all know by know, this x30 series only shipped with a new software version and some very discrete aesthetic changes. We now believe the x40 was probably meant to be the real successor, but unknown circumstances have somehow prevented TomTom from shipping it before now.

It has not been disclosed yet when TomTom will release the new devices. What we do know, is that next Friday the annual IFA fair starts in Berlin. We wouldn't at all be surprised if TomTom had something interesting to announce then...

Update
User Stuart was messing around with the TomTom website, and stumbled upon this page, which mentions the TomTom GO 940 LIVE, but also a 'regular' GO 940 model. The differences between those two models are still unclear though. But both models appear to feature safety warnings, petrol prices and local search via Google, as we already mentioned. We now also notice HD Traffic, the Buddy system and a new version of TomTom's weather forecast mentioned.

Although it's US-only, check out the Dash Express at www.dash.net. The TomTom 940 LIVE sounds very similar to this device.

Holdfast I am starting to find myself drifting over to the ever growing band of disillusioned TomTom owners. We have seen in quick succession the introduction of the 9xx series. Having purchased the 910,920 and the 930, the only people that are benefiting are the family members that have received my old devices. However there comes a point when I will have to say stop. It appears that from the rumours that this is just a re-badging exercise with updated software. Are things that bad at TomTom that they need to use this underhand marketing ploy to generate extra revenue. In the current economic climate I would think that this is a retrograde step. diablo.gif

Colin K I could not agree more. They need to produce a "high end" device which works 100% without glitches (and I am talking about the basic navigation function rather than all the other "bells and whistles" like phone compatibility, traffic, music, photos, etc which I have no use for whatsoever), rationalise and simplify the map-updating procedure, and shoot the b@stard who devised TT HOME (as well as the TT website) and start again from the ground up with their user software and customer support.
