TomTom to replace RDS/TMC receivers

March 9 2007, 13:39

TomTom will soon offer GO x10 owners who are dissatisfied with their TMC receiver the chance to trade it in for an improved version.

By yourNAV editors
TomTom replaces RDS/TMC receiverSince September last year, owners of the TomTom GO 510, 710 and 910 have had the option of receiving free traffic information via TMC (Traffic Message Channel). For this, a separate RDS/TMC receiver needed to be purchased and connected to the mount of the GO. For many people this worked well, but some had problems…

Practice
In practice it seemed that in some cases, the traffic info is downloaded very slowly or not at all, which led to a lot of frustration. Fortunately, for the affected users, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Today, TomTom has acknowledged the problem, and will soon offer every dissatisfied customer the chance to trade his or her faulty TMC antenna in for an improved version.

Official response
This is the official reaction TomTom has sent us:

“The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver was designed to provide seamless integration of RDS-TMC traffic information with the user-interface of the TomTom GO, providing customers with the best traffic experience on the market.

Through listening to valuable customer feedback, however, it has come to our attention that in some cases the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver does not live up to our customers' expectations. TomTom has taken feedback very seriously and customers who experience problems will be offered a replacement of their RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver, a new version of which will feature improved performance and which we strive to have available Q2 2007.”

Dissatisfied owners of a TomTom RDS/TMC receiver should, at first, report their problem to TomTom’s Customer Support. There they will decide whether the receiver is really malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. If this is the case, these customers names will be put onto a list and they will be automatically notified when the new receiver becomes available. TomTom expects the replacement antennas to start shipping in the second quarter of 2007.

Dear Mr Humphrey,

Again sir, we would like to clarify that we can not advise if there will be a revised model of the TMC receiver to be released so again, please register to our newsletter so you can be kept informed of any new releases.

is this a lack of communication in what they call "customer Support" or is it just that they don't like me very much as I had the audacity to complain lol.gif lol.gif

camerauk I was going to get one of these soon as my traffic is due to expire, i had best wait now for the new units to come out, only trouble is will TT recall the old ones or will they just add the new one aggressive.gif
Hope someone that gets a new one will be able to let us know what the difference is so that anyone who buys one will know they are getting a new updated unit good.gif

I sent an email to TT support yesterday asking whether a new TMC was going to be released and this was the reply:

"Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support. We are currently reviewing the situation at the moment regarding the RDS-TMC Receiver and will make an announcement at the end of March or middle of April 2007 to that effect."

Perhaps i should have kept the bits after smashing it up with a hammer.
But still sticking to what i've said and never buying tom tom again, (as much as i love my 910)
Still find it amazing that they had the front to market such a pile of c--p.

I bought mine from EasyDevices.co.uk

Never had a traffic update on it yet. sad.gif

That's good news.

I'm determined to look on the bright side so won't mention all the e-mails I sent to TT about how flakey the TMC antenna is and all the denials I got back!

Now, how (and when) can we get the ball rolling on replacements....?

I sent a question to TomTom support yesterday, but the response I got today was the usual garbage telling my how to plug the TMC receiver in....

Clearly, the official line about replacing the TMC receiver for disatisfied users has not yet reached the caring support department!

Frankly, this whole TMC episode has left me somewhat sick of TomTom - to the point that I'd like to swap the entire setup to a Garmin!

However, I will have one more attempt at getting TomTom support to recognise me as the owner of a poorly functioning TMC receiver - in the hope that I can get a replacement in Q2.

Does anyone have any advice on how to frame the question to TomTom?

May I suggest you check my copy e-mail posted on the following forum link;

www.yournav.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7834&st=300

The wording I used in my complaint worked, as I have been told I will receive a replacement!

However, that will not necessarily be the case for everyone. Check the actual wording of the Tomtom press release;

"Dissatisfied owners of a TomTom RDS/TMC receiver should, at first, report their problem to TomTom’s Customer Support. There they will decide whether the receiver is really malfunctioning and needs to be replaced."

It would appear that you need to ensure your complaint is strongly worded, or they will continue to fob you off!

The seller is liable if the goods are not of merchantable quality. Don't let them fob you off. I have just returned mine that arrived yesterday to Amazon for a refund. Perhaps someone should get in touch with BBC Watchdog.

The news does not seem to be very public. I called customer services, and they told me there was no such statement from tomtom, at least officially, for now. So instead, I asked I wanted to have my device repaired. Silly thing is that the device doesn't have a serial number on it, so it seems to be troublesome to return it... anyway, it's a long story smile.gif

TT Cust Servs are clearly playing their cards close to their chest (for some reason). After a game of e-mail tennis with 1st and 2nd line support I also received the following:

The only question now is when in Q2....?

Dear Automan,

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.

Please make sure that the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is firmly plugged into the windscreen dock. When in the RDS/TMC Status Screen (tap on the Traffic bar on the right side of the screen) or TomTom Traffic menu, please check to see if the software is scrolling through radio stations. If it is scrolling through frequencies and radio stations it is an indication that the receiver is working, however it is unable to lock onto a useable FM frequency. It is particularly important that the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is positioned correctly. The receiver cable must be stretched out entirely, as it is the cable itself that functions as an antenna and which receives the RDS-TMC signal.

If you know the frequency of a local radio station that transmits RDS-TMC information, you can try tuning to this specific frequency. Please go to the "RDS/TMC Status Screen" by tapping on the traffic bar on the right side of the screen when in the main navigation view. Then click on the "Tune RDS/TMC" icon and enter the frequency. Please note that there needs to be a route planned in order to use this functionality.

If you have tried to "Tune" into a frequency but with no result then the RDS-TMC receiver may not be functioning appropriately. Please try and adjust the location of the receiver to a position where a stronger signal is received. Please also test the receiver outside of the car for a few minutes to verify that it is able to receive a signal.

If the receiver still does not receive a useable signal please re-install the latest software, 6.524, through TomTom HOME.

If the receiver does not receive a signal at all, not even outside the car, then please let us know and we will book the RDS-TMC receiver and the car docking shoe in for repair to get them tested and replaced if necessary.

Please note that TMC information is transmitted through conventional FM radio broadcasts. The source of the RDS-TMC traffic information, and the radio stations and organizations responsible for the transmission of the signal, vary for every country and region in which the service is available. Additionally, the strength of the radio signal that is transmitted locally can vary greatly, depending on the proximity to an FM transmitter mast and its transmission strength.

A limitation of TMC technology is therefore that in certain local areas it may not be possible to receive a useable RDS-TMC signal.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

I reacon i got away light then cos i bought a unit from Argos, after 24 hours of it hanging out of the bedroom i still didnt get a lock up on frequencies.... I took it back to Argos telling them it didnt work and said that tomtom have ackwnowledged they have a problem and without an argument they took it back without trying to offer me a replacement.....

For those of you still trying to modify your aerials rather than trying to tag it onto your car aerials wbhy not add a BNC plug onto the cable and put a very small mag mount on the roof preferably in the middle to give the signal the best chance of capture....

I have tried to follow the instructions to manually tune to an RDS staion, but every time I click on the traffic bar, the tomtom freezes then reboots itself.

Anyone else seen this and have a solution?

I spoke with tom tom cusotmer support. They are aware that the new receiver is coming as they have been inofrmed that a new bundle of GPS plus radio wil be on the market immenently ( 2 week'ish). But they have not heard anything re replacing those already in the field. Seems therefore that the guys who have already bought the radio are going to have to wait as second in the queue for their replacements to sales.

I see that Tomtom are now selling the new TMC/RDS receiver as part of the new product http://www.tomtom.com/products/product.php...ory=0&Lid=1 Shouldn't they provide the new receiver to those who bought the old one and are waiting for a replacement first?

AFAIAA TomTom are NOT going to sell the antenna in the UK, unless/until the major problems get sorted out.

There are two versions of each model, the Go520, the Go520T, the Go720 and the Go720T.
The "T" versions are not being sold in the UK.

Before you all smash your RDS TMC module's, I've got mine working but it will invalidate any warranty you have on the receiver module.

There is another mod on the internet which shows you how to connect the car's aerial to a contact inside the RDS TMC module. I tried this but it messed up my radio reception.

My way.

Run another coax feed from your car aerial to somewhere out of site to place the RDS TMC. One end of the coax needs to be connected to the car's aerial feed, use a suitable doubler.

Now open the RDS TMC module by tapping it lightly all the way round with a small hammer, this breaks the glued halves apart.

Get some thin insulated wire, I used a wire from some telephone cable, and form a spiral coil as large as possible to fit insde the RDS TMC module. Feed the free end of the coil of wire out of the RDS TMC unit and reseal. Now solder the internal wire only of the coax to the free end of the coil of wire.

This should induce a radio signal into the RDS TMC module.

Switch on the TomTom and you will see the RDS TMC scanning. After a few minutes, can take up to ten minutes, the module should lock onto a RDS signal. You will probably see an arrow going around the image of a car first. This tells you it has found a radio signal and is confirming it is broadcasting RDS. The indicator will then turn green.

I have travelled a few miles around where I live and get a steady green indicator all the time, where if never used to before.

I hope it works for you.

I've heard a rumour that TomTom are going to design a RDS TMC module with a connection on it for a car aerial.

PS. I am going to try connecting a mobile phone T Bar car aerial to the RDS TMC module next. I will let you know if it works better.
