Tele Atlas at work in Moscow, Russia.Tele Atlas, supplier of map data for TomTom, Navigon, Navman and Mio, keeps expanding. Their latest expansion is the upstart of a completely new company Tele Atlas RUS, with its main offices in Moscow.

Takeover
The new company is the logical result after the takeover of Navmaps, the largest navigational mapping company in Russia. Both companies have been working closely together since 2004. This resulted in a digital Russian map, which comprises the data of the major cities of Moscow, St Petersburg and Kaliningrad. The map also contains the major roads that connect the most important routes in the European and the Asian part of the country. This information runs right up to the Chinese border and the Eastern part of the country.

Expansions
Tele Atlas is currently hard at work adding new data onto their Eastern-European road-grid database. From Czech Rep., Hungary, Poland and Russia certain parts were already covered. Not too long ago, information on the Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania was also added.

The new office in Russia is good news for Tele Atlas’s partners such as BMW, Porsche, DaimlerChysler, Audi, Blaupunkt, Mio and Pioneer, all of whom have introduced products in Russia, for which Tele Atlas supplies the digital map data.

Jack Reinelt, Tele Atlas COO and Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, looks at this development as an important step forward for his company: "Tele Atlas RUS will make our lead position on Russia and Eastern Europe even stronger. Our partners are constantly searching for expansions in this region, and this new operation provides a steady platform for improving the content of our maps."

At the moment, Tele Atlas has roughly 2.300 employees in 20 different countries.

That's great, but they can't get the maps accurate in the UK. They should focus on getting them right first before going into other areas.
