Garmin really goes for gold. After the first price cuts in early September, they now do it again: the company announced some major price cuts. This time only for the Nüvi 300 and 350.The recommended prices of both Nüvi's were already lowered quite a lot last time, and again this time the discounts are not to be sneezed at. Now you can buy a Nüvi 300 for ¤ 299,- and a Nüvi 350 for 399,-. To put things into perspective: not too long ago, a 300 cost ¤ 450,- and a 350 ¤ 625,- !
Garmin vs TomTom
If you look at the new Garmin prices for more than a few moments, they might seem familiar to you. This is because they are identical to the recommended prices that TomTom asks for their newly released ONE New Edition Regional and Europe edition. It doesn't take a market-analyst to recognise a full-frontal attack on TomTom's pole position by Garmin here. And Garmin has a few very good selling points. Not only are the Nüvis smaller and lighter than the ONEs, they also have better specifications. The batteries are also more powerful and the Garmin PND's allow you to play MP3 files and view photos, unlike the TomToms. The Nüvi 350 even features text-to-speech!
Review
The Nüvi series was introduced to the market one year ago (September 2005) with the 300 and 350 models. And since then, the series has been expanded quite a lot. In March 2006 the 310 and 360 appeared (which supported hands-free phoning), and very recently the 660 was added to the portfolio. We've already published an in-depth review of this newest Nüvi: Nüvi 660: should TomTom be worried?
