Electronics giant Sony hasn't quite given up on navigation yet: starting this November two new PND's a supposed to gain a bit of market share for them. These new devices, the Nav-U80 and the Nav-U81T, both feature a large 4,3 inch touch screen and what Sony calls 'Position Plus'.

Position Plus
Sony's Position Plus is a technology which is supposed to provide a better positioning at times when reception of GPS signals is bad or non-existent even. By means of a built-in acceleration and pressure sensor, the position and movement of the vehicle can be estimated with more accuracy.

Also new are the 'Gesture Commands'. Using this technology, frequently used commands like 'Navigate Home', or 'Look for nearest petrol pump' can be entered with one finger-movement across the screen.

Maps
The Nav-U81T ships standard with a 4 GB harddisk which holds the complete European map with 37 countries. The Nav-U80 ships with the regional maps of the area of purchase on the integrated 512 MB of internal memory. The U81T comes with TMC built-in, for the U80 it's available as an option. Both PND's enable hands-free phoning in combination with a supported Bluetooth mobile phone.

Prices for both devices are still unknown for now, but we expect more info on that soon.

I had the opportunity to road test the previous Sony NavU 70. imo the imperative with any new Sony's is to sort out the functionality and ensure they are intuitive in use. A good machine but ,for me, ruined by how difficult they are to use compared to TomTom products. I'll be interetsed to see if they have done so with this latest pnd.

I have just bought the new sony nav-U51 sat nav. I was waiting for it's launch as it prewarns of speed cameras. I gave it the first trial run yesterday on a 35 mile journey. It was absolutely great other than it did not warn of any cameras. I knew I had passed some. I rang Sony today and I might add on an 0870 number which is expensive by the minute. The sony man did not know why it had not picked up cameras and asked me to wait while he checked. It was quite a few minutes before he came back and said that there was a problem. Evidently a website that should have been up and running before the launch of the sat nav was not ready. It will be ready within the next month. I have to log on to the website with a special code before all camera data is downloaded onto my sat nav. It's a good job I did not rely on the sat nav picking up cameras on my journey as I could have collected a few points. What would Sony say if I rang them and said " what about these speeding tickets then?" I was not prewarned by the store where I bought the sat nav and there was no information in the pack at all about this website. I now have a sat nav that I bought as a camera warning and it does not work. That's not right surely. Any replies on this from anyone please??

They would say "Tough luck" camera warnings are only a driving aid, you are responsible for the operation of your vehicle.

Hi Vikash,

I am very angry as I am still cannot get camera warnings. Sony have the website online but it is still not running. I was told it would be up and running in a month which was the Xmas week and it has a week to go before that month is up. I shall be wanting compensation if it is not running by a week's time. It is sold with camersa warnings and it does not work. The gps is great and I am very pleased with the device other than this camersa warning problem. The way it works is that when the website is running, you enter a code or serial number and that allows the satellite to download the camera information onto the sat nav.

Erm, I don't think so...
I don't think the US Military would let Sony use their satellites like that!

Hi Ladybird,
I had seen the website running for few days in dec and you could downlaod spped camera database. But I had not bought 71 t then. I hope it will be functional soon. Did you try calling sony customer support? The only problem by Sony NV-71t has is that it tomes painfully long time for route calculation. once it took 16 minutes to calculate 40 kms route from my office to home. The TMC works pretty fine. i love other features too especially the graphic display. I am wondering if route calculation delay is only pertaining to my unit or is it universal problem with 71t. my earlier sony gps NV-50 was very fast

crazylegs Errrr am I missing something here...

Vikash and Ladybird you have been given advice by members of this forum and you are blatantly ignoring it..

Its as if you are talking over the members giving you advice and ignoring them..

Its already been stated that you have bought the satnav as a satnav device namely to get you from a-b swiftly and with the least hassle on your journey. Speed camera locations are an added extra and are there to help you slow down in an accident area blackspot, not to flout the law and speed between each camera location...

And for your information satellites do not download safety camera positions onto satnavs.. nea.gif

Unbelieveable.... shok.gif lol.gif

Dear Crazylegs
my question was more towards delay in route calculation which is definitely a concern.

Well said, crazylegs. I hope they get nicked. It troubles me that people with that sort of mentality are allowed driving licences at all. By the way, I heard magistrates courts now treat possession of a speed camera database as prima facie evidence of criminal intent (quite rightly).

Jolly Roger Welcome to the forums , hi.gif

I suspect that magistrates treat possession of speed trap detectors as being evidence of criminal intent. Speed camera location data is published freely with the co-operation of law enforcement agencies to promote safer driving.
