Garmin prepares new Nüvi launch

Not much is known yet, and Garmin refrains from commenting on the subject for the moment, but take it from us that they will release a couple of new PND's to the market pretty soon. The new series in question will be the completely new 600-series in the Nüvi range.

Based on a first photo which we were able to lay our hands on, the unit in question will be called the Nüvi 660. We also expect a Nüvi 610.

4 inch
Most important novelty compared to the current generation of Nüvi PND's is the use of a 4 inch (480 x 272 pixels) screen. Of course this will make the device a bit more wide: 12,4 cm as opposed to 9,8 cm now. The height (7,4 cm) and depth (2,3 cm) will more or less remain the same as with the current Nüvi's. Based on the info we've created an Artist Impression of what we think the new Nüvi will look like. You can click on this image on the bottom of this newspost for a larger view.

Other specifications we were able to find out about the new unit are it's weight of 164 grams, the size of it's internal memory (700 MB) and the fact that it will ship standard with an integrated FM Transmitter and TMC receiver.

Price are of course still a big question mark, but in the United States the most commonly whispered price is a bit less than $ 1.000,-. Which wouldn't be all that bad a price, considering the still very recent Nüvi 360 sells for $ 890,- over there.

Colin K Can't wait. If it has features comparable with, or better than, the the TT *10 series I will pay whatever they ask. Garmin are an old and reputable company and I have used their products for almost ten years; presumably they are engaged on thorough research and development before these new units are released, unlike TT who have them in the shops two weeks after they have produced a prototype.

I sometimes wonder how TT managed to create this media/advertising hype which has duped millions of customers into purchasing a very mediocre product with support and backup which varies from poor to non-existent.

Colin K Nice message Bruce - thanks. No, haven't sold the Landrover, in fact I have just pre-ordered the new 2007 model Defender which will be previewed at the Paris motor show in September.

For some reason my "profile" has been stripped of avatar and all personal details and I cannot get them back - some malicious b******d has been "having a go" I suspect.

The Forum seems very boring at the moment, don't you think?

I would find it difficult to see why anyone would do anything to your avatar or personal details, I wouldn't say that would be the way to deal with things. However if your mind is set that it's malicious, then there is little I can say or do that will sway you.

Bart Indeed. Neither I or any of the mods will *ever* tamper with any account 'just for the fun of it'. We hardly ever delete anything in that specific field, and if we do, it's because it wasn't appropriate for some reason (like eg. a link to a commercial site). In that case, we also *always* give the user a notification, either by PM or by replying directly in the post.

(First post. Be gentle blush.gif )

Hmmm. Nuvi has always seemed a bit overpriced to me. I respect what Garmin does, but they should stick to marine and terrestrial navigation; auto just doesn't stack up in my opinion. I think I'm going to hold out for the TomTom One mark 2... provided they release it in Europe. glare.gif Seems to me that TT just has a sleeker interface and the new One looks to be a good buy (500 American).

Strange though, that Tom^2 would release the new One in USA first seeing as how they're a Dutch company and Garmin pretty much runs the PND show over there.

... which is probably the exact reason!

Be careful what you wish for. I made a major mistake when I bought the Nuvi 360. The user interface is atrocious to put it mildly. Only thing really going for the Nuvi is its small form factor. That is about all. The speaker is inadequate, no QWERTY keyboard option, only one waypoint, no itinerary option, slow screen refreshes and the list goes on.

I had a first gen TT GO and it has more ability to customize the interface than the brand new Nuvi does. Every time the text to speech (TTS) speaks a long sentence, the entire map stops moving or updating until it is done. It won’t play anything but MP3 so if you have WMA or iTunes format you are out of luck. No real functionality either to the MP3 player beyond basic playing.

The optional language guide is a joke. For example if you look up a word in English and want the German equivalent, it will show you the written version of it but not speak it BUT it will speak the ORIGINAL English word. IF you want to hear the German word spoken then you have to SWITCH to German and then look it up there where it will then have the English word written but be unable to be spoken. Same thing goes for the phrases. I don’t know who they had to test these things but obviously they were awake when they did it.

If you post some of these issues on other websites they immediately pull your posts. It is almost like there is a conspiracy to protect Garmin from truly useful feedback about their product. Each time Garmin issues a new code update, they take out more features than are added and if people complain enough they might put it back in later. It is not like there is a lot of bells and whistles in the user interface to begin with. To say it has a dumb interface is and understatement. If you want both Euro and US maps you will be out a lot of money for a GPS that they tried to simplify to the point that if you have more than about 2 hours of using a GPS, then you will be frustrated by all the things it should do but doesn’t.

If you are SERIOUSLY considering buying one of these thoroughly investigate it before you buy it. To say I wasted my money on it wouldn’t be harsh enough. I don’t know if Garmin hasn’t a clue or they purposely dumbed it down so much but if you have expect much in the way of features you will be sadly disappointed. Lack of the QWERTY keyboard option is annoying. There is NO zip code search in the US. Each time you want an address it never remembers your last city so if you want another address in New York City, you have to start at the state level and drill down to the city again. Yet websites like GPSPassion seem to gloss over these issues and when users post about them they posts get pulled pretty quickly. Hopefully that won’t be the case here.

I’ve been a long time Garmin owner and only owned Garmin GPS (except for PDA based nav) until I bought my TT GO. I decided to come back to Garmin when they came out with the Nuvi. It has been a decision I have regretted in short order.
