Yesterday, Garmin International announced a new product in the United States. Garmin's newest is the zümo 550, a PND specifically meant for motorcyclists and scooterists. It's fully expected that the zümo will cross over to Europe as well.

Specific
The new zümo is literally packed with features and a lot of them are of course specifically meant for motor and scooter use. Eg. the device is built for left-handed use, the buttons which appear on the touch screen are extra big, it's waterproof according to the IEC 60529 IPX7 standard and Garmin has also implemented Bluetooth for a wireless connection to an earpiece and microphone combo which is meant to be installed inside the helmet.

Besides all that, the zümo has other specifications which almost have become standard in PND-land. So yes, it's got a built-in MP3 player and JPEG photo viewer. TMC traffic info can also be used with it, but that's optional. For the complete specifications as they are known now, we refer to our Product File.

The zümo will be available in stores starting October 2006 and will have a US advised introductory price of $ 1.077,-. European prices have not been made available yet.

I wondered how long it would take them to bring one out. I'd love to try one and see how it compares to my Rider, any way, hopefully they won't make the same mistakes, with firmware etc, that Tom Tom have. At over $1000 certainly isn't cheap and it'll be interesting to see what price they put on it for Europe and the UK.

We'll see. Tom Tom were tight fisted releasing Rider with only UK maps and not with the European as well. Tom Tom have messed up the V6 upgrade and have problems with the contacts drilling. If Garmin get there’s out with out any hassle then I think Tom Tom have a lot to worry about. Customers are already waiting to see how Tom Tom sorts their problems out; after all, their customer relations aren’t the best in the world are they.

shauneco Well I suppose TomTom may have some compatition regarding keeping some of its customers, Although I have found TomTom customer service a pleasure to deal with when I phoned them. Although they did take a while to respond when I once emailed them. Yes I know they have had problems with the v6 firmware but atleast they are trying to do something to rectifie this. The Garmin Zumo looks like a very nice device but I still think that it has an exceptionally high price tag to be competing with the Rider And Garmin have had problems with their firmware in the past and I dought that the Garmin Zumo will be error free when first released.

Well hopefully this will put a fire under TomTom's butt and give the Rider some of the same featrures that I am sure it is capable of like...STREET LEVEL VOICE PROMPTS!!!!! It is dumb that they do not have this for a premium product.

I do however see the Zumo as overpriced, buy about $200 (and that price is introductory)???

The Rider was nearly twice it's current price when it first came out but look at it now! At the current exchange rates that $1077 will equal £579. That will put it well on par with the Rider when it first came out

Does anyone know if the Rider was released anywhere else before Europe. By the Time the Zumo comes here it will have been in general use for a good few months and any problems will have shown up. It should be well sorted by the time we get our filthy little hands on It!

This is approximately the same price as the Rider when it first came out so I don't know why people think this Garmin is expensive.

Problems with V6 software? Who cares when the thing falls out of it's cradle onto the road and is smashed to pieces? If you were lucky enough to realise it was going to fall out and tied it on with string you then only have to worry about damage to the contacts on the unit so that it switches on and off all the time and that it is not supplied with a suitable method of hearing the instructions.

I am waiting with baited breathe to see if this Garmin is any better.

Yep, I'd be interested in trying one out. The Rider was my first adventure into GPS and so far it's not so bad but I can't help but feel that it was rushed into the market without proper'real world' testing.

Some audio info on zumo, does it for me over the Rider but am also looking for more detail on the Magellan 2200T before final decision......

Hi Nigel,

Thank you for contacting Garmin (Europe) Ltd.

Thank you for your interest in the Zumo, The unit itself does not have an
audio output but the bracket that the unit will connect to on your
motorcycle will have an audio output for you to plug equipment into.

If you have any more questions please let me know.

Best Regards

Subject: zumo

customer_query = Before I place any "Pre-order" for the zumo Europe can you
please confirm if the zumo has an audio out socket, this is a necessity
required by motorcyclists to connect to on-board and aftermarket
sound/intercom systems. Hopefully you listened to motorcyclists and included
it as you do with the Quest model, having only a bluetooth option for spoken
instructions is totally inadequate for a true motorcycle gps unit.
Thank you
